When you start doing the research into hair loss, you’ll fast approach one of the main leading causes of hair loss, which is DHT. DHT stands for Dihydrotestosterone. DHT is thought to cause hair follicles to miniaturize, and this contributes to male pattern hair loss. By the age of 50 years, over half of the men in the U.S. will probably experience hair loss mediated by DHT. The leading hair loss product you may be recommended by friends or family, or through research online is Rogaine. Rogaine is a minoxidil based hair loss over-the-counter treatment that is FDA approved. It’s main key ingredient is minoxidil, which makes Rogaine, Rogaine.

How does DHT Cause Hair Loss?

If you’re genetically susceptible to hair loss, DHT can bind to receptors in your hair follicles and cause them to shrink, weaken and eventually die. This process is called ‘miniaturization,’ and it eventually leads to a complete end of hair growth in DHT-affected hair follicles.

What is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil is used to help hair growth in the treatment of male pattern baldness and hair regrowth. It is not used for baldness at the front of the scalp or receding hairline in men. The foam and 2 percent minoxidil solution is also used to help hair growth in women with thinning hair. Minoxidil belongs to a class of drugs known as vasodilators. It is not known how minoxidil causes hair growth. This medication is not used for sudden/patchy hair loss, unexplained hair loss (e.g., no family history of hair loss), or hair loss after giving birth.

What are some common side effects of Minoxidil?

Common side effects of Minoxidil include:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Tiredness
  • Temporary edema (swelling) while taking this medication, especially during the first few weeks as your body adjusts to the lower blood pressure. This is normal.

Does Rogaine / Minoxidil Block DHT?

Minoxidil doesn’t stop hair loss, but it does help grow new hair thicker and faster than before. In short, minoxidil does not block DHT and we repeat, does not stop hair loss.  Rogaine (Minoxidil) brands itself as a hair regrowth treatment and solution, NOT as a hair loss treatment. Rogaine is a leading recommended brand and treatment by dermatologist worldwide for thinning hair.

How Long Does It Take To See Results with Minoxidil (Rogaine?)

Minoxidil starts working immediately but won’t produce any noticeable results for the first three to six months. After six months, you should start to see some improvement, with the “final” results usually visible after approximately one year of continuous usage.

Other DHT Blocking Solutions to Minoxidil (Rogaine)

If you’re looking for other options to Rogaine (Minoxidil,) one option that is increasing in popularity due to its efficacy and having fewer side effects than minoxidil is DS Laboratories Spectral.DNC-N. Spectral.DNC-N uses the active ingredient Nanoxidil 5% with its nanosome technology. Spectral DNC-N is able to penetrate the hair follicles more due to its lighter molecular weight.
